A defining play?

22 August 2008 No Comment

After our Ayersville football family gathering on Thursday I got to listen to the Defiance/Napoleon game. WOW! What another classic. A one-point win for Defiance, but the thing that really stuck out to me is the missed extra point by Napoleon kicker Clint Detmer. The extra point would have tied the game and maybe forced an overtime. My heart always goes to anyone like Detmer, but let’s remember PLEASE, that one play does not, let me repeat that EVER, decide a football game.

In a team sport there are too many people and too many plays during the three hours of play that combine for the outcome. Did anyone miss an assignment for Napoleon on any of Defiance’s scoring drives? I’ll bet they did. And without Detmer’s big plays, the Cats wouldn’t have had a chance. So master Detmer, don’t forget the miss, it will make you stronger, but don’t let it define you or the rest of your season. And any to anyone who, had anything negative to say about Detmer, shame on you! One play does not decide a football game.
